Chinatown and the Pit
Aliases: none Status: Major
Chinatown and the Pit is three things stacked vertically: a district on the street, a supernatural bazaar underneath it, and a steel-walled fighting arena underneath that. One entry, because the text treats them as one descent.
Description
The street entrance
Chinatown proper is the surface layer — the district the crew walks through to find the way down. The entrance to what lies beneath is a street-level affair: you find the door, you go down.
The descending route
The way down is a route, not a room — passages leading from the street into the underground. The text supports a spatial account (entrance, descent, arrival) without supplying measurements or a floor plan, so none is drawn here.
The bazaar
Below the street, before the arena, lies the market: a bazaar of supernatural commerce. Stalls, vendors, goods you cannot buy topside. It has the independent identity of a black market with its own clientele — fighters, bettors, and the curious pass through it on their way to the main event.
The Pit
The arena itself: a steel-walled pit ringed by circular bleachers, with staging spaces for the fighters. The text at one point calls it “an intimate colosseum.” That is a simile — a description of scale and atmosphere — and it does not make this building The Colosseum, which is a separate named venue with its own entry.
The Kumité
The Kumité is the event held in the Pit, not an alternative name for the building. Organized supernatural combat, with wagers riding on the outcomes and Uncle Rob running a powered-fighter experiment on the side: his experimental strain, Psycho Crusher, goes into Killian via a vape pen, and Killian glows and puts his opponent down with a white energy sphere. Rob’s grasp of the dose and its duration is incomplete — which, in a fighting pit, is exactly as dangerous as it sounds.
Role in Volume 01
- Big Trouble in Chinatown: The district, the descent, the bazaar, and the Pit all appear here, in that order. The Kumité is the centerpiece: organized combat, betting, and Rob’s experiment converging in the steel-walled arena. The feared consequences of the dosing stay feared rather than realized — the supernova is a warning, not an event.
Relationships
- The Colosseum: explicitly not this. The simile is a simile.
- Uncle Rob: runs the powered-fighter experiment from the sidelines.
- Killian: the experiment’s fighter, for better and worse.
Notes
- Kumité is the event, not the building. Do not use it as an alternative name for the Pit.
- “An intimate colosseum” is descriptive language in the manuscript, not an identification with the concert venue. The two entries stay separate.
- The underground geography is given as a sequence (street, descent, bazaar, pit) rather than a measured plan. No distances, depths, or capacities are established.
