Fourth and Fifth Dimension

Aliases: Fourth Dimension Status: Minor

The Fourth and Fifth Dimension is less a place you visit than a condition you endure — the narrated term for wherever Mary Jane goes after smoking the Interstellar Joint. She is gone from ordinary space, but she is not gone from the apartment. That distinction is the whole entry.

Description

The mechanism is simple and demonstrated: Uncle Rob gives Homeboy a joint rolled in deep-blue paper; Mary Jane consumes it and disappears. Her clothes remain behind. She does not.

What she experiences, in the order the text establishes it:

  • Spatial anchoring. She stays fixed at the apartment’s location — perceiving the apartment and the passage of time there, unable to be anywhere else.
  • Audible speech. Her voice remains audible to the people in ordinary space. She can talk to them; they cannot see her.
  • Perception of changing time. She experiences time moving at the apartment while she is displaced from it.
  • Object manipulation. Late in the episode she graduates from voice to touch, interacting with the Monopoly board, the dice, and a token — ordinary objects, in ordinary space — before she returns.

That is the complete demonstrated geography. There is no tour, no map, no scenery.

Role in Volume 01

  • Mary Jane’s Four Dimensional Adventure: The joint, the disappearance, the anchored haunting, the Monopoly board, the return. Rob’s explanations and forecasts throughout are his own attributed theories — including a four-to-five-month prognosis that fails in this case. Mary Jane comes back on the story’s schedule, not his.

Relationships

  • Interstellar Joint: the cause. The joint sends her there; nothing else in either volume is shown to open the same door.
  • Mary Jane: the only person demonstrated to have experienced it.
  • Uncle Rob: the resident theorist. His explanations are recorded as his, not as established fact.

Notes

  • “Fourth Dimension” appears as a dialogue variant; the narrated wording is “Fourth and Fifth Dimension.” Both are kept as the title and alias.
  • General geography, universal entry and exit rules, and whether anyone else could get there the same way are all unknown. The page states only what Mary Jane’s episode demonstrates.
  • No external physics model is imposed on the fictional account. Rob’s theories stay attributed to Rob.
  • A Volume 2 passage recalls Mary Jane’s dimensional experience; it adds no new geography, so the entry remains Volume 01.
