Azazel

Status: One-off

One of Lucy’s Free Angels, the cadre of the fallen, alongside Mammon. He is the first of the two to speak and introduce himself, and in Homeboy’s professional opinion the owner of a cool fucking name. He addresses Lucy as Mistress with total reverence, and takes a bullet in the back shielding the crew’s escape from Dos Santos.

Description

Built and dressed exactly like Mammon and the four other Free Angels in the basement, same size, same cut: simply how Lucy’s cadre looks. Carries himself with formal, almost courtly deference toward Lucy: straightens his posture to introduce himself, intones Mistress like a title. The only crack in the composure comes when Lucy screams him out of the bedroom, at which point he retreats looking sheepish.

Role in Volume 01

In Lucy’s Box, Azazel and Mammon barge into Chino’s apartment demanding where is she, their Mistress, and, guided by the sounds coming from the bedroom, barge in there too, only for Lucy to order them onto the couch until she’s done. He rides shotgun in the limousine while Mammon drives, stands in the basement while Lucy interrogates Dos Santos, and asks what should be done with the prisoner. When Dos Santos breaks free and kills Mammon, Azazel shoves Homeboy and Mary Jane toward the exit with his body. He takes Dos Santos’s next shot square in the back for it, collapsing to the floor as the remaining Free Angels surge. Lucy later speaks of her brothers as killed, and Chino assumes the same; whether Azazel survived the back wound is never shown on-page.

Relationships

  • Lucy: his Mistress; absolute reverence and obedience.
  • Mammon: his counterpart in the cadre; they move and speak as a pair.
  • Homeboy: brief, baffled mutual regard; Homeboy loves the name, offers the pair cookies.

Notes

  • First to speak and first to introduce himself: the cadre’s front man by default.
