Mammon

Status: One-off (deceased)

One of Lucy’s Free Angels, the cadre of the fallen, alongside Azazel. He drives the limousine, asks Lucy what to do with the prisoner, and dies in the basement when Dos Santos breaks free, steals his gun, and shoots him point-blank in the head. His name does not survive contact with Homeboy.

Description

Built and dressed exactly like Azazel and the other Free Angels: same size, same cut. Stoic and economical: he drives with quiet precision and asks what should we do with him, Mistress in a flat, dutiful tone, showing mild disgust rather than panic at anything. His defining on-page moment is dying professionally: slipping slightly on the severed testicle on the basement floor, checking his shoe with mild disgust, and reaching for his coat gun like it’s paperwork.

Role in Volume 01

In Lucy’s Box, Mammon barges into Chino’s apartment with Azazel looking for their Mistress, gets screamed out of the bedroom by Lucy, and sits boxed in on the couch. He drives the limousine to the basement, stands guard through the interrogation, and, after Dos Santos saws through his ropes with a glass shard, is disarmed in one impossible motion and shot dead before he hits the ground. Lucy later mourns her brothers.

Relationships

  • Lucy: his Mistress; he serves as driver and enforcer.
  • Azazel: his counterpart; they operate as a unit.
  • Chino and Homeboy: the source of his humiliation: His name is Mammon! / no seas mamón / la mamaste, to blank stares from everyone else in the room. Learn some Spanish, white people.

Notes

  • The Mammon joke is the story’s purest Chino-and-Homeboy beat: a perfect bilingual pun detonated in a room where nobody else speaks Spanish.
