Lucy is the Devil. Asked outright, “So… like… are you the Devil?”, she answers, simply, “Yes.” She leads a cadre of Fallen Angels (Mammon and Azazel among them) who address her as Mistress and call themselves, by her own preference, Free Angels rather than Fallen. She and her cadre are celestial beings wearing human shape; stripped of that shape, she says, “we’re far more beautiful than this.” Her stated reason for being on Earth at all is freedom: in Heaven, her people are slaves, forced into eternal praise; here, they’re free. The demon hunter who comes for her, Dos Santos, spits “Satanás” and “Diablo” at her mid-fight: devil-epithets flung by an enemy, not names she goes by or claims for herself.

None of that is visible on the surface. To Chino she’s first just a photo on his phone (a redhead he’s nervous about affording a date with), and then his girlfriend: fond, foul-mouthed, and possessive of her privacy even mid-tryst with the door shut and two of her own men waiting sheepishly on the couch.

The Adventures: Volume 01

Lucy is Chino’s girlfriend across Mrs. Dealer and the Edibles Factory and her own titular story, Lucy’s Box, and nowhere else. She doesn’t reappear as a character after Story 9, only as photos Chino keeps scrolling through in Count Dragula and El Cucuy and the Nightmares. Lucy’s Box is where nearly everything about her comes out at once: she produces a stash box identical to Chino and Homeboy’s and reveals she had them made. Hers still has weed in it; theirs is the well-traveled twin, its own chain of owners running from a Pharaoh’s Blue Lotus box through a Duke of France and a run of German generals and officers across the World Wars, ending with the Japanese officer Chino’s grandfather pinched it from as a war trophy in World War II. Her cadre, led by lieutenants Mammon and Azazel, is quietly being hunted by Dos Santos, a blind demon hunter who can see Free Angels for what they really are. When Homeboy asks the obvious question point-blank, she answers it just as plainly, to disbelieving laughter from both him and Chino. The interrogation that follows is her own retinue questioning Dos Santos, and it ends badly: he kills Mammon and shoots Azazel before Chino, Homeboy, and Mary Jane help subdue and bury him.

The story ends with Lucy breaking things off with Chino on the sidewalk outside his apartment: her brothers were killed in the fight, and she has to find whatever’s left of her people, because they’re only safe in numbers. She tells him not to make it a thing, needles him one last time on her way into the limo, and is gone. Chino confirms to Homeboy, flatly, that she broke up with him. She’s never seen again, only remembered in photos he can’t stop looking at.

The Adventures: Volume 02

  • The Return of Dos Santos: Comes to Chino begging for help: Dos Santos is back. Clashes with Uncle Rob, volunteers as bait, and takes a deep abdominal wound in the Ominous Forest. Killian kills Dos Santos; she falls for him (“my lady”).
  • Lucy Ex Machina: Invites the crew to the Jiggly Room, gets drugged and caged with everyone else, and agrees to dance for Mr. Bitches to buy time. Destroys his sexbot lineup with Killian’s sword, kills Freja, and declares “I’m the Devil” to a stunned Mr. Bitches. Reconciles with Sarah Yazzie.
  • The Emperor of the Universe: Caught mid-bush with Killian at the barbecue. The Emperor of the Universe mistakes Killian for God and begs for her hand in marriage; she clutches Killian’s arm while Killian declines.
