Free Angels
Aliases: Fallen Angels Status: Supporting
The Free Angels are Lucy’s cadre in Lucy’s Box: fallen angels who reject the “demon” label entirely. Per Lucy, demons aren’t real. What a demon hunter hunts is Fallen Angels, and the cadre prefers “Free Angels.” The known members are Lucy herself (their Mistress), Azazel, Mammon, and four unnamed others, “each identical in size and dress to Azazel and Mammon,” standing motionless along the basement walls. They dress sharp, drive a limousine, call Lucy “Mistress” with total reverence, and get knocked out cold by edibles on Chino’s couch while watching Reefer Madness.
Description
Tall men, identical in size and dress, reverent toward Lucy. The blind Dos Santos sees them as they really are, which per Lucy is “considerably more beautiful” than the shapes they wear.
What “Free Angels” means
Heaven, per Lucy, is “a fucking hellscape where everyone is fucking happy all the fucking time,” singing the same songs forever to stroke God’s ego. A dead Free Angel just goes back there, which Lucy frames as the real punishment: “an eternity of mandatory praise choir.” The cadre broke away. Dos Santos, the demon hunter, is blind to humans but the good Lord let him see Free Angels, which is what made him their hunter.
Role in Volume 01
- Lucy’s Box: their only appearance. Azazel and Mammon come looking for Lucy at Chino’s apartment, get parked on the couch, and later drive the limo (Mammon driving, Azazel shotgun) to the basement where the cadre has Dos Santos bound in a chair. The interrogation goes wrong: Dos Santos snatches Mammon’s own gun and fires point-blank into Mammon’s head, killing him instantly, then shoots Azazel in the back as Azazel shields the others’ escape. The remaining four surge at Dos Santos in righteous fury. The group flees in the bulletproof limo (Mary Jane driving), buries Dos Santos in the Ominous Forest, and Lucy parts ways with Chino afterward: her brothers are dead, she’s being hunted, and Free Angels are only safe in numbers.
Relationships
- Lucy: their Mistress; the one they answer to.
- Azazel: cadre member; takes a bullet shielding the escape.
- Mammon: cadre member; killed by Dos Santos with his own gun.
- Dos Santos: their hunter; buried alive in the Ominous Forest.
- Chino, Homeboy, Mary Jane: the civilians caught in the middle.
Notes
- Azazel’s fate is unresolved on the page: shot in the back, collapsed, and later spoken of as killed, but his death is never shown.
- Mammon’s death is definitive: point-blank headshot, dead before he hit the ground.
- The four unnamed angels’ fates after they surge at Dos Santos are unknown.
- The text’s terminology stays as written: Lucy insists they are Free Angels, not demons, while Dos Santos is called a demon hunter throughout.
